A Day in the Life of a Belfast Bakery
A lot happens before the door opens at 9am. At Krumb, we are an artisan bakery Belfast and that means the work starts quietly, long before the first customer walks in. This is what a day in our wee bakery actually looks like, and why everything we make tastes like it does.

The Morning: When the Artisan Bakery Belfast Day Begins
The day at Krumb starts early. Before the Ormeau Road stirs, our kitchen is already going. Butter comes out to soften. Doughs are shaped. Ovens are warming. The smell of baking pastry in an empty kitchen at that hour is one of our very favourite things.
Everything at Krumb is handmade from scratch. That is not a marketing phrase, it is just how we do things. No pre-mixes, no shortcuts. Doughs are made by hand, laminated carefully, rested properly. Fillings are made fresh. Each small batch is treated like it matters, because it does. The moment you bite into something and it is genuinely good, all of that early morning effort makes complete sense.
Founder Sadhbh Baker spent over 15 years working in Ireland's best bakeries before opening Krumb in 2024, and that experience shows in the way the kitchen runs. There is a rhythm to it, a sense of what needs to happen when, and a refusal to rush anything that needs time.
Small Batches: Why We Do Not Make More Than We Need
We bake in small batches every single day. That is a deliberate choice. Small batches mean fresher product, better quality control, and nothing sitting around past its best. It also means some things sell out. We know that can be a bit frustrating if you have your heart set on a particular bake, but it is the honest price of doing things properly.
The handmade bakes in our cabinet change with the seasons, with what is available locally and with what we feel like making. We champion Northern Irish producers where we can, working with local suppliers whose ingredients make our bakes better. That connection to where our ingredients come from is something we genuinely care about.
Behind the Scenes: Coffee, Syrups and the Rest
Alongside the baking, there is coffee to prepare for. Our espresso drinks are made on beans from Lucid Coffee Roasters, and getting the extraction right matters. Grind settings are checked, machines are cleaned and calibrated, and the team makes sure everything is dialled in before the first coffee of the day goes out.
We also make our own syrups in the kitchen: vanilla, caramel and brown sugar. These go into drinks every day and are sold in bottles to take home. They are made the same way everything else is here, properly, from scratch, with real ingredients. A little bakery magic in a bottle.
By the time 9am rolls around and the first customers arrive, the cabinet is full, the coffee is on, and the whole place smells incredible. That part never gets old.
The People and the Place
Krumb is at 258 Ormeau Road, a spot we love. The Ormeau Road is a real community, full of people who appreciate good food, good coffee and places that give a damn. We try to be that kind of place. Every customer who comes through the door gets served with care, whether they are a daily regular or popping in for the first time.
We open Wednesday to Sunday, 9am to 4pm. Those hours are shaped by the reality of running an artisan bakery Belfast the right way. Baking properly takes time. A shorter week means we can do it well every day we open, rather than stretching ourselves thin.
Why It Matters That Things Are Handmade
There is a real difference between something made by hand in a small kitchen and something produced in volume. You can taste it. You can see it in the way a croissant layers, or the way a cake holds its shape, or the way a pastry shatters when you bite into it. These are not accidents. They are the result of care, skill and a lot of early mornings.
That is what being an artisan bakery in Belfast means to us. Not just a label, but a genuine commitment to making things properly, every day, for every customer. Every last Krumb of it. Our large sourdough is a perfect example: long fermentation, shaped by hand, baked to a deep crust that only patience can produce.
